History of Peking Opera

As one of the schools of opera that were formed in Beijing, Peking Opera has a history of nearly 200 years. Based on Hui Opera and Han Opera, it evolved by absorbing advantages of Kinshan opera, Qinqiang opera and other operas. Hui opera entered Beijing in the year of 1790. The first theatrical troupe of Hui opera that came to Beijing was the famous Sanqing Squad. After them, came Sixi Squad, Hechun Squad and Chuntai Squad. Together, they were called "the Four Anhui Squads".

Peking Opera formally took shape after the twentieth year of Daoquang Eeign (1840). At this phase, its different melodies had already been developed, its types of roles and there were programs of performance with its own style. The first generation of actors of Peking Opera had emerged, too. Among them, Yu Sheng san, Zhang Er'kui, Cheng Changgeng was called "the best three actors of laosheng". Besides them, laosheng actor and Peking Opera playwright Lu Shengkui was very famous, too. Cheng Changgeng was the representative figure of this period. He had made far more efforts than any of his contemporary actors in combining Han Opera and Hui Opera and absorbing, converting and promoting Kunshan Opera. He had contributed a lot to the development of Peking Opera and greatly influenced its performing art.

The division of types of roles in Peking Opera is very strict. At its early stage, there were all together seven types: Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou, Wuhang, Liuhang(Longtao), eventually, they combined into four types: Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou.

The costumes in Peking opera are graceful, magnificent, elegant and brilliant, most of which are made in handicraft embroidery. As the traditional Chinese pattern are adopted, the costumes are of a high aesthetic value. The types of facial make-ups in Peking opera are rich and various, depicting different characters and remarkable images, therefore they are highly appreciated. Moreover there are numerous fixed editions of facial make-up. Since Mei Lanfang, the grand master of Peking opera, visited Japan in 1919, Peking opera has become more and more popular with people all over the world, and it has made an excellent contribution to cultural exchange between China and the West, to friendly association and to improvement of solidarity.

Mei Lanfang was one of the greatest performing artists of Peking Opera. His best performance includs: The Blade of the Universe, Farewell to My Concubine, In the Garden and the Start of the Dream, Mu Ke Stockade and Emperor Mu, Mulan Joins the Army, Counterattack Against the Jin Troupes, The Grieve of the Living and Dead, Xi Shi, The Goddess of Luo River, and the play he wrote himself in his later years, Mu Guiying Took Command.
